Aloo Chana Chaat is a recipe that originates from Pakistan, and is found all over South Asia. It translates as a potato and chickpea snack or salad. It’s one of the most simplest and cheapest recipes out there, and arguably, one of the best due its amazing flavours! It is also a great health food (in my opinion) due to the high amounts of protein and fibre in the chickpeas, and it’s vegan! It can be eaten on its own for lunch, or part of a meal for dinner. I normally have a bowl with a vegetable samosa (or two) as the textures together merge perfectly.

The recipe is very versatile, so you add whatever you like, as almost everything works . My favourite recipe is as follows:

Ingredients needed:

  • One whole can of chickpeas (I get the cooked ones as it is easier)

  • Three small potatoes (diced)

  • One small white onion (finely diced)

  • One vine tomato (diced)

  • Quarter cucumber (diced)

  • One green chilli (finely chopped)

  • Teaspoon of sugar

  • Salt to taste

  • Tablespoon of National Chat Masala Mix (found in all Asian supermarkets and most large supermarkets)

Method

The first thing I always do is prep my ingredients. Prepping ingredients is the only thing this recipe needs as there is no cooking, so it doesn’t take long at all. I peeled and diced the potatoes before boiling them as it reduces the boiling time quite a bit.

Next, I mixed all ingredients together, whilst the potatoes were boiling. I boiled them for 8 minutes, until they were soft. Don’t add the spices (sugar, salt, chaat masala) until the potatoes have been added.

Add the potatoes once boiled, drained and cooled. Then add the spices and mix!

I recommend letting it cool in the fridge for about half an hour to an hour so the flavours can absorb and mix.

Once cooled, sprinkle coriander on top and serve with samosas, poppadoms, or even alone.

This is my favourite way to have Aloo Chana Chaat, so I hope you try it and enjoy the recipe!
